The undead dragon arched its neck upwards, letting out a loud shrill scream that shook the room, showering the adventurers with centuries old dust. She lifted her leg, slamming her bony hand into the ground and sending Ophelia, Fern, and Nephia onto the stone floor with a resounding crack. Without a second thought Tanwen swept Vex off the ground, swinging her by her feet in progressively faster circles before letting go – sending her towards the dragon’s exposed skull. Vex gripped her axe, swinging it hard into the glowing horns of the massive beast.

The dragon laughed, her voice resounding around the room.

‘I haven’t done this in centuries. I’m going to enjoy this, very, very, much…’

Hello! I’m Seb, and what you just read wasn’t an extract from the latest fantasy novel but instead came from the Dungeons and Dragons game I run every Monday as part of the Tabletop Society. So…

What is the Tabletop Society?

The tabletop society is one of the most active societies at Escape Studios, we currently have three private groups that meet once a week to play tabletop role playing games (TTRPGs) and we meet as a whole club three to four times a term to play everything else. This includes well-known games such as Cards Against Humanity and Uno, and group favourites such as the Mad Max inspired car game Thunder Road and murder mystery game Werewolf.

What is a Tabletop Game?

Very simply, tabletop games are games normally played against flat surfaces. This can include everything from Chess and Monopoly to Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons. They are almost exclusively played in person, and frequently involve some kind of strategy. You’ve almost certainly played one before, it’s a very broad spectrum.

Why join the Tabletop Society?

Firstly, the Tabletop Society gives you access to a great group of Game Masters (GM). Currently, we have several GMs who can run: Dungeons and Dragons, Masks, Scum and Villainy, Dread, Mörk Borg, and Lancer to name a few. Game Masters aren’t always easy to find, so this is a great opportunity to experiment with these games. Secondly, and most importantly, it’s an opportunity to bond with new friends, in a unique and really fun way. By running my Dungeons and Dragons game this year, spending hours exploring a completely fictional fantasy world, I’ve met an incredible group of people and experienced exciting personal stories with them.

So, if you're an Escape student and have the opportunity to come along, please do! Enjoy some brand-new games, make friends and maybe leave with your own epic story to tell. The best way to join is through the student experience channel on Discord, where you can find the link to sign up to the Tabletop Society server.
