Tips for breaking into the video games industry

Breaking into the video games industry can be challenging, but with the right approach, it's entirely achievable. Our recent Press start: careers in games webinar offered valuable advice from seasoned professionals on how to navigate this journey.
The UK Creative Industries generate £124.6 billion a year and employ more than 2.4 million people (UK Govt, 2024).
In terms of your game plan (pun intended), take the time to ask yourself: what do I want to do, and why do I want it? Are you inspired by cartoon-style games, do you want to work for a huge studio? Do you want to make your own indie games? Once you know your creative direction, you can take action with the following tips.
Our top tips
- Build a strong portfolio: Showcase your work, whether it's game prototypes, art assets, or design documents. This should be tailored to the type of role you are going for. For example, game designers should focus on mechanics and systems rather than aesthetics.
- Network actively: Attend industry events, join Discord communities, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Sharing your attendance at events to increase visibility and engagement.
- Stay positive and honest: Studios value candidates who are genuine and open about their strengths and crucially, weaknesses. Honesty about your weaknesses and evidencing your efforts to address them can work in your favour, demonstrating self-awareness and motivation to improve.
- Specialise and keep learning: Identify what you enjoy and become a master in your craft. Whether it's character design, level design, or technical art, continuous learning is key to growth.
- Understand studio expectations: Research the studios you want to work for, align your portfolio with their style, and be prepared to discuss your creative influences and workflow.
Careers in games are not just about technical expertise but also about collaboration, adaptability, and a genuine love for the craft. The industry is welcoming and collaborative.
