Escape Studios Film and Screen Saturday Club graduates

It was a brilliant year for Escape Studios' Film and Screen Saturday Club, a free opportunity for 13-16 year olds to learn 3D animation at our North Greenwich campus. For four months, students worked hard to learn the ropes of Unreal Engine, an industry standard software used in games, animation, film and TV. Following their own creative directions, students built impressive and whimsical sets where tentacled monsters crushed entire towns, ninjas fought mannequins and medieval knights spun around on office chairs. But it was even more impressive to see these students voluntarily come in on a Saturday morning to learn something new, showing commitment week after week to develop their skills. Well done to all!
A masterclass at the British Museum
In March, we braved the weekend crowds of the British Museum to attend a masterclass with Industrial Light & Magic, VFX industry giants who were responsible for visual effects in the likes of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Avatar, and much more. We visited the museum's Samurai exhibition, which traced the connections from historical samurai armour to modern costume design, such as Darth Vader's suit! Industrial Light & Magic then showed us how their artists drew inspiration from samurai armour to design for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers movies, rounding off the day with a drawing workshop.
The National Saturday Club Graduation Ceremonies and Summer Show
What an inspirational way to cap off the year! We celebrated our club members' achievements at The Institution of Engineering and Technology, where they walked across the stage and received certificates to the proud applause of parents and tutors. Afterwards, we toured the showcase at Somerset House, which boasted the incredible work of over 100 Saturday Clubs all across London. There, our young artists got to see their creations in a museum context, encouraging them to aspire further and dream of the next time their work will be professionally displayed.
To paraphrase the speech from National Saturday Club graduation speaker Sim Scavazza: There is truly no replacement for human creativity, and the skills developed with time and effort will make our young artists invaluable in the future.
