STUDYING LIVE ONLINE
What is meant by "Live Online" study?
When you choose to study live online at Escape Studios, you experience the same course as on-campus students from the comfort of your home.
You can expect online access to the same industry-experienced tutors and studio assistants (when applicable). You will not be watching pre-recorded sessions, but taking an active role with real-time interactions through remote access as the class is being taught.
Live online students have timetabled sessions, providing a clear schedule that you can incorporate into your daily routine, no matter where you are. One of the biggest benefits of studying live online is the flexibility it provides; being able to join from your home, a café or even another country.
Note: we currently offer live online study options for postgraduate masters and short courses only. Undergraduate degree programmes are taught exclusively in person at our London campus.
Which online study platforms will I use?
Live online classes are held on Microsoft Teams. During class, you can interact with your tutor (and Studio Assistant where applicable) in real-time. You can also stay in touch with your classmates and tutor through Teams channels.
For class materials, you will find these on Blackboard, our Virtual Learning Environment. Here you'll have access to reading materials, recordings of classes, tutorials from our tutors and more to support your studies.
All study platforms can be accessed through the Escape Studios student portal.
Tech requirements for live online study
- A strong and stable WiFi connection
- Multiple screens are ideal, so you can have the software on one screen, and interact with the class on another
- Cloud storage or an external hard drive to back up your work - we recommend 1TB+!
- A microphone and (optionally) a webcam, to interact with the class
- A three-button mouse or graphics tablet.
You can study live online using a laptop or PC, but we recommend a 'gaming' device to ensure that software will run well.
What support do live online students get?
During class, you'll be able to interact with your tutor in real-time, ask questions and receive feedback. For postgraduate and daytime short courses, you may also have a Studio Assistant during class time. Outside of class, you'll have a range of support, including:
- One-to-one calls with your tutor for feedback as needed
- Access to our Talent Development Team
- Access to our Student Services Team
- Free wellbeing advice and counselling from our partner, Spectrum.Life
FAQS
How can I access the software taught on my course?
During class time, you can remotely access our workstations via Anyware. This allows you to use the software installed on our workstations.
Outside of class time, we can't guarantee remote access to our workstations, so we advise having your own license for relevant software so you can work on projects outside of class. Many of the packages we use offer free or discounted licenses for students.
Do I get a student account as an online student?
All online students will receive an Escape Studios student account and email address upon enrolment. This allows you to access student discounts and deals, including on most of the software we teach.
Can I attend graduation as an online student?
Postgraduate live online students are welcome to attend graduation! This can be arranged with the Student Services team.
Can online students attend on-campus events?
Live online students are welcome to attend on-campus events as guests. As we do not issue student passes to live online students, you will just need to arrange with Student Services to get a guest pass for events.
Could I attend class in-person?
Live online students cannot attend classes in-person, as our studios have a set number of seats. We do not currently offer a hybrid study option, so applicants must choose a study method at the point of application. If you have applied for live online and wish to change to in-person or vice versa prior to enrolment, please contact the Admissions Team.
What time are online classes taught?
Our classes are taught in UK time. Postgraduate and daytime short courses are taught between 9:00am and 5:00pm, with most classes finishing by 4:00pm. Evening short courses are typically 7:00pm - 10:00pm. If your time zone is significantly different to the UK, you may find it difficult to join live online courses due to the time difference.
